Biological Pest Control for Box/Buxus Plants
Box-Guard XenTari comprises 54% Bacillus thuringiensis, subspecies aizawai. XenTari is a biological insecticide that provides rapid, safe control of Box moth caterpillars. XenTari is sprayed onto the leaves, and once eaten, destroys the caterpillar's stomach.
Caterpillars stop feeding within hours of ingesting the poison, preventing further damage to the plant, and die within days.
Box-Guard XenTari is the same product as TopBuxus XenTari, which is supplied by a company in the Netherlands.
The Problem
The Box caterpillar (Cydalima perspectalis) eats the leaves of the box plant and can defoliate a small specimen overnight.
Once they have eaten the leaves, the caterpillars remove the bark and start eating the green cambium layer underneath, which is most damaging to the plant.
Box caterpillars hibernate over winter in cocoons of silk webbing. They emerge from their cocoons in the spring, when the temperature rises consistently above 15°C, and begin feeding.
After about a month of feeding, mature caterpillars (around 4cm long, lime green with black and white stripes) spin a new, larger cocoon of white webbing. Inside this cocoon, they transform into a pupa (chrysalis) and will emerge as adult box tree moths about a week or two later.

Targeted Action
Because XenTari targets the Box caterpillar's stomach, it is safe for insects such as ladybirds and bees, and other non-target species, including birds and other animals.
Application
The product is supplied in re-sealable sachets. Orders of 25g or less are supplied in 5g sachets. Orders of 30g or more are supplied in 10g sachets. The dose rate is as follows -
Mix 1g of XenTari with 1 Litre of water to treat 10m² of Box/Buxus plant. Spray thoughoughly onto leaves, including the underside, with a garden sprayer.
Once sprayed, XenTari is typically effective for 7 to 10 days. UV rays break down the active Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) bacteria, and rain can wash the product off the leaves.
XenTari should be applied on a dry day, several hours before the next rain is forecast. For best results, apply in the evening to reduce UV degradation.
Apply whenever caterpillars are present. The season is typically April to October, with 3 caterpillar cycles per season.
All orders are supplied with full instructions and a measuring spoon.
Storage
XenTari should be stored in a cool, dry place, protected from direct sunlight and frost.
We recommend that XenTari be used within 2 years of purchase, although it may remain effectice for longer periods if stored correctly.
Once mixed with water, the product should be used immediately.
